Prompt: something big and small
My Baby Niece
potatoes for cheeks and bright
onyx eyes – she peeks at us from
from under her smiley sun blanket
with a grumpy, concerned pout.
then she promptly falls asleep
and dreams of milk and cuddles. I lie awake thinking about the
state of our country and it’s immense
hatred for little girls

Prompt: multiple things happening at once
My Place of Residence, 2018
While they attended a billion dollar one-night yacht party,
the blue-collars lived in cramped rooms reeking of fear and desperation.
While they spent the country’s money on a meaningless war,
the debts they owed went unpaid and millions of good people who’ve
worked here all their lives packed up and left to nothing and nowhere.
While they plan their next luxury vacation to the Maldives,
we’re counting pennies for the freedom to live.
