Sitting by the fire
with a frightened baby girl in her arms,
she sways back and forth and finds herself
humming with the undulating rhythm of her body.
In a heartbeat, the baby quietens and she
is left spellbound. What was this magic?
She looks around and hears it everywhere –
in the cracking and splintering of the wood,
the thump thump of the men sparring with each other,
the unearthly whistling of the winter wind.
Ecstatic, she runs off to find her tribe.
She had finally discovered something
they can hold on to forever.
